I think you automatically get a Special Visa when you arrive in Australia as long as you meet certain security, character and health requirements. Once your passport has the arrival stamp it is the only evidence that you hold this visa. and as far as I know because I have a friend there and she fall in love with the country , you can actually stay and work in Australia indefinitely as long as you remain of good character.

NO As a NZ PR, you must have a work permit and a visitor visa to live and work in australia. You may also lose the PR status in NZ. You can only move to australia with no visa (under the treaty) AFTER you become a NZ citizen and have (or get) a valid NZ passport.
