What do I need to do to be able to live in Australia?
I am an American Citizen and I want to move to Australia. What do I need and/or need to do to make Australia my future home? Thank you.

A visa and it's not easy to get one. Go on www.immi.gov.au have a look on the MODL list and if you find your job on it you can apply for a skill visa. But it takes at least 1 year to get it and it's very expensive. An easier and faster way to get it is to try to find a company that would agree to sponsor you. You'll find all the information on the immigration website. If you can get the Working Holiday visa (don't know if it's possible when you're american), you can come here with it and try to get the sponsorship or skilled visa from here.

You will need a visa and to get it you must be a skilled worker with something to contribute to the country. Check out your embassy to get a detailed list of what you will need or just go to http://www.immi.gov.au

The most important requirement is that you must have qualifications and experience in an occupation in which workers are in demand in Australia. Next, your skills must be recognised here. http://www.immi.gov.au/skilled/general-skilled-migration/skilled-occupations/index.htm First link, the overall list of occupations (the SOL). Second link, the MODL which is a shortlist of the most urgently required ones. Third link, select Australian Skills Recognition Information and select your occupation. You must meet health and character requirements. http://www.immi.gov.au/allforms/health-requirements/index.htm http://www.immi.gov.au/allforms/character-requirements/index.htm If you don't have a sponsoring employer, you must pass a points test: http://www.immi.gov.au/skilled/general-skilled-migration/175/eligibility-applicant.htm You need 120 points for an independent, permanent visa and 100 points for a family sponsored regional visa. http://www.immi.gov.au/allforms/booklets/books6.htm There is no points test for employer sponsored visas, but your occupation must still be listed on the SOL: http://www.immi.gov.au/allforms/booklets/1131.pdf For all work visas, having Australian qualifications and/or education is very beneficial.
